KATHMANDU: Chairman of the Madhesi Commission Dr. Bijay Kumar Dutta has said removing reservations would be against the spirit of the constitution because the constitution has guaranteed it.

Dr. Dutta’s statement has come at a time when the National Inclusion Commission has published a report saying the existing reservation policy should end soon.

Speaking at a function ‘Interaction on the reservation with stakeholders of civil society leaders’ at Madhesi Commission at Janakpur on Thursday Dr. Dutta said it is everyone’s responsibility to uphold the provisions of the constitution and the reservation policy plays an important role in bringing people from various communities to the political and administrative mainstream.

“Therefore, there is no sign of removing this [reservation],” Dutta said.

Speaking at the function some civil society leaders said a study report has been published by some organizations against the government’s policy of reservation which recommended the government end reservation after some time. They have requested the leadership of the Madhesi Commission to take the lead to ensure that the reservation policy remains intact.

Chairman Dr. Dutta assured the civil society leaders that he and his team of the commission were positive on the request made by them.
